Marcus Island now called
Minami Tori Shima, located approximately 600 miles from Iwo Jima.
For reference the transmitter tower in the picture is 1350 feet tall, so
as you can see, the largest thing on the island was the runway which was
not very long. The island safety equipment consisted of a 20 lb Co2
extinguisher and a 14 foot Boston Whaler. We never had any mishaps
with flights while I was there thank goodness.
The following photographs were all submitted by William Romska from his
time on Marcus Island now Minami Tori Shima. He said the highlights
of his time there were when the Air America folks landed with supplies.
